News: America’s Health Rankings Senior Data Update

The United Health Foundation, in partnership with the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA)has updated the America’s Health Rankings Senior Data. America’s Health Rankings (AHR) provides an analysis of national health on a state-by-state basis by evaluating a historical and comprehensive set of health, environmental and socioeconomic data to determine national and state health benchmarks.

The updated data includes 44 measures of population health to present a comprehensive look at the health of older adults. These measures are based on an updated model that reflects the growing understanding of the impact of social determinants on health as well as the need for collaboration from such sectors as agriculture, education, housing, and transportation to improve health outcomes and population health.

As health officials work to protect the health of older Americans, this snapshot of seniors’ health across the country is vital to the goal of improving states’ population health, addressing health inequities, and better understand the underlying health of a population. Along with updated State summaries (available here), America’s Health Rankings has curated measures from across the platform that are identified as COVID-19 risk factors (available here).

With a growing focus on addressing public health challenges across the country, including social isolation and multiple chronic diseases, the data, charts and summaries from the 2020 Senior Data Update can be leveraged to improve population health and address health inequities among seniors in our communities.
