How did you get started in healthcare? Did you always have a passion in this area or did it happen by chance?
After my dad had a stroke when I was in 8th grade, I started going to Shands Hospital in Gainesville with my mom for his experimental surgeries. Due to his neuroetiology, I decided to major in Neuroscience. I did not get into medical school the first time around, so I figured I would go make money for a year and then try again… that didn’t end up happening! I went to work at Parke Davis, which led to a role at Pfizer, which led me to where I am now.
How has WBL helped you, personally and professionally?
WBL has helped me meet so many amazing women who have different perspectives on our field, which helps me to see things from various angles. It also helped me to join the board of a company called Avadim Holdings. Hayfin, who invested in Avadim, found me through a WBL board posting. I am now off the board as a full-time employee running the clinical sales side of the business and working in infection prevention for Theraworx, which is a new and interesting space for me.
How do you stay motivated in your day-to-day? What keeps you inspired?
It might sound old school, but I am big on getting things done with a checklist so I have some satisfaction at the end of the day. I try to fit in hot yoga five times a week, which helps me find balance in my day-to-day and recenter for when I’m back at work. Of course, my biggest inspiration is my 10-year-old, Brielle. I want to be the kind of mom she wants to emulate as she progresses in life.
What healthcare trend are you watching most closely?
Like everyone else, AI — it’s certainly a buzzword right now. I have concerns about what the long-term impacts are in optimizing healthcare. Can we do more with less and not have quality impacted? Triple Aim is all about this, but will AI really make us better off? I will wait and see.
What might WBL members be surprised to learn about you?
Years ago, I was modeling in NYC unbeknownst to Pfizer, where I was working at the time. One day, the CEO’s staff, Hank McKinnell, came to my office and asked me to take some pictures with them. I then became the face of Pfizer.com alongside our CEO in 1999 when the internet was fairly new. My family called me and told me they saw me on Pfizer.com, and I had no clue what they were talking about! I did get a $100 AMEX gift card afterward, so I was super happy to take my friends out for a round of drinks!
